A long time means a lot to talk about

December 19th, 2008 by fda

Since returning to my old stomping grounds, I haven’t stopped moving.  Work, and my other recent ventures dominate my days, and i fill the space between playing acoustic music with my room mates, writing the soundtrack to my life.  The lines of code and song lyrics form a double helix around my perception, and more than ever before i am making the connections between the functional capabilities of the human mind versus those of the silicon transistor based CPU.  My own projects at the moment include the Glass Moon, a venue of sorts that happens to be the house I currently inhabit.  I aim to reinvigorate it, and bring it back to it’s former glory through the new website.  Phil Smo, a Glass Moon alum, is releasing his new CD “Revolution Apocalypse” tonight at Funk ‘n Waffles, where he will be selling his T-shirts(which i designed).  You can check it out the myspace here to learn more about the Glass Moon, and stay tuned for more updates.

One for me

October 18th, 2008 by fda

In the coming weeks I am charged to:

  1. Finish adding features to the administrative system for the Claremont Preparatory School in Manhattan
  2. Finalize the new storefront system for A Taste of the North Fork
  3. Create an eMagazine publishing system for Gabe Mercury Inc

Mountain Dew definitely would not endorse it’s use here, so let’s call “them” my “unofficial” sponsor.

Who reads this anyway?

September 7th, 2008 by fda

I just finished reading an article over at coding horror, on the use of comments in programming. When it comes to commenting my own code, I always first ask myself: “Who else needs to be able to read this?” (The article in question happens to be written with a team effort in mind). As a freelancer, the real answer to that question is often not available. Perhaps version 2 will be coded by another, and perhaps not. And so the answer becomes, well, me - for the time being, the only chartable map to set a course by. Next comes, “is it obvious what this code does?”, a simple function with a human readable name might start off with one comment, something like - function to (blank) , and end with something like - returns (blank). Possibility Girl

Everyone thinks Possibility Girl is possibly a genius. Any day now, they continually agree, Possibility Girl will make it big. Become a star. ‘You won’t forget us when you’re famous, will you?’ they always say, as Possibility Girl begins yet another amazing project.

The only person, who doesn’t believe in Possibility Girl’s possible genius, is Possibility Girl herself. She thinks they’re being too kind. She isn’t gifted at all. She’s a fake genius, bluffing her way through life. She is convinced the moment she tries to actually achieve her full potential, she will fail, fall flat on her face, and the people that once admired her from afar, will admire her no more. And so Possibility Girl never actually achieves anything. She just sits on the edge of her possible glory and basks in the adulation of her potential.

If I don’t post for a good stretch - it’s usually a good thing

These days I find it hard to devote time to anything not work-related, in the office I’m jumping between multiple projects, and my own clients eat up my (would be) down-time. Read More »

My apologies, I merely ducked out for a spell

August 21st, 2008 by fda

In my absence, I’m certain the cricket’s concerto was enough to keep up appearances.  I’m posting when I should be sleeping again, but it warrants mention that, for the time being at the least, I can count myself a team member over at Croteau Designs.  I spent the day in the office working on flash animation.  i pulled a full 10 hour day, and I’m headed back in tomorrow to keep right on at it.  There are some little naked squirrel babies a few hours from here… i wonder if they will ever grow to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed…

What to call it though…

i’ve been talking for a while about building a social network of my own, probably centered around music, art, design, and creation in general.  i’ve always been intrigued by invention, innovation, and ingenuity, and i have this eerie sort of feeling that i might not be alone on this one.  the summer before my 17th birthday i actually did build a social network;  a primitive messaging system that centered on the ability to add friends and keep track of what they were doing.  it was very basic, and hardly scalable, but it worked.  i never did put it online though, i left for college with the entire php/html source on a cd-r, and forgot all about my dream of bringing people together for a common good.

You just slapped me in the face with a dead fish.. thanks

i had an awakening today, in the form of a chat with a programmer at eliteSEM. we talked about what makes good design, and how it’s about more than colors that look nice, how it’s more than just a visual concept. we talked a lot about something i’ve known for quite some time: form follows function. make it work, and make it intuitive — and then make it pretty. Another day in the office, tra la la

August 5th, 2008 by fda

Wow, did I just title this post tra la la? I think I did. Anyhow, last night Croteau contracted me for a quick fix on the new Claremont class sign up system. Claremont is like private school for the K-5 set, you’ve heard of finishing school right? Well, if you’re finished, you had to start somewhere, and in Manhattan, that place is Claremont Preparatory School.

I was in the office for most of today, and I designed a new flash banner to go along with the redesign of Serviceleads.net, you can check it out here. I’m not sure yet when the new site will be up, but I can tell you that it’s a vast improvement over the current design. Oh yeah, now I remember what the tra la la’ing was all about, August 12th the office might be having a Six Flags day!

I’m meeting with Lorne Jay Landsman tomorrow, over at EliteSEM, but in the meantime, I’m keeping busy by polishing off a few designs for my 2 new favorite sites. I’m actually thinking about adding a section to my main page here to showcase my latest submissions. I’m not sure if there’s a API I can make use of, or if I’ll have to enter each one manually like I do here, but we’ll see. There’s definitely a redesign in the works… Read More »

knock, knock

I received an email today from Pete Burgeson, director of marketing at crowdSPRING.  I’m not making any comparisons just yet, but the model is fairly similar to 99designs.  It’s a marketplace for creatives, which means it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a designer.

99 designs! well, a few anyway

July 27th, 2008 by fda

I’ve been keeping busy these days by designing submissions for contests on 99designs.com.  This searchable list of projects is already becoming an invaluable tool for me to hone my skills, develop new ones, and see firsthand where the trends are headed.  Here’s what I’ve done in the past 2 days: Read More »

Starting next week, I’ll be interning at EliteSEM.  This is me excited.  Great opportunities await, just on the other side of that door, and now, I have a key…  let’s see if it fits the lock.

New Side Project - This one’s for me

July 19th, 2008 by fda

I love purevolume.com, in fact I refuse to create a music myspace.  One thing myspace does do better, though, is the ability to have more than four(4) songs in your playlist.  So I said to myself, as I often do when noone else is listening, I’m gonna write my own media player, and start my own website to showcase my music.  So that’s what I’m gonna do.  It’s my pet project, and I’m going to chronicle the entire process right here.  Stay tuned to figure out how I go from having no idea where to even start, to a fully functioning final product.
